Evidence of God 11/7/08, 7:20AM
Friday, November 7, 2008 at 02:43PM Having grown up with the crisp apple autumns of small-town upstate New York, during a time when children had intimate relationships with the outdoors, an almost orgasmic appreciation for fall color is in my blood.
Photograph by Sophie of MontrealWhen I picked up the kids from school yesterday, the leaves along the road to our youngest boy's school were particularly beautiful and featured every earth tone from myrtle green to deepest carmine and seal brown. However, this morning as I chauffered the boys back to their schools, despite the fact that I'm no morning person and felt particularly sleep deprived and thankful that the kids are not morning people either, the smile that overtook me was unavoidable when I noticed that something had changed overnight.
Maybe the moisture from yesterday's morning rain and all day clouds combined with today's clear air, bright sunshine, and 54 degree a.m. temperature, had something to do with the change. However it happened, the golden glow perfection of this morning's fall beauty so awed me that I wouldn't have been surprised if Jesus had come back during our drive. If I thought I could capture the view with any semblance of photographic justice, I'd have sped home for a camera and back out to do just that. Every mile of our route was graced with a dazzlingly colored glory that makes me reminisce about childhood hours spent rolling in piles of raked leaves or competing with neighborhood playmates to see who could collect the greatest number of new fallen colors; makes me crave MacIntosh apples, which are almost never available in Richmond, Virginia; and wish I had a photographic memory with a printer attached. Most of all what comes to mind at times like this perfect autumn morning is "EOG" in my mental shorthand, "Evidence of God", a Creator beyond reason or limit who makes green leaves turn gold just so His children will smile.

Hi Diane,
Beautiful writing!! I can see the colors you described when I close my eyes. Yes, the autumn season w/ the changing leaves is breathtaking. It's this time of the year that I really appreciate living in the Northeast. Definite evidence of a mighty Creator!
Just loved this post.
We llived in Colorado for a few years, and we loved the fall colors of the leaves. It is so awesome to see those colors.
Blessing to you, and love your blog
