Original Sin

What hurts me
Is not that the Garden of Eden is lost
But that all the descendants
Of Firstwoman and Firstman
Have so little understanding
Of family and place

I am your family
I am not lost

Eat, eat
From the palm of my hand
And know

Forbidden eating was not the original sin
But eating so little we only learned
Our differences and nakedness
And blame

We should have stuffed fruit in our pockets
Before we left Eden in shame
So we could fill up continuing hungers

Satisfaction with a small bit of knowledge
Is doom
