On the Air

Click here to listen to my first interview as an author: Sunday, 1/11/09 on Urban Literary Review (BlogTalkRadio) with L. Martin Johnson Pratt ( @iluvblackwomen on Twitter ).

Click here to listen to my Saturday, 7/11/09 interview with Evangelist Maureen Chen and her co-host Juergen on Kingdom Club on BlogTalkRadio.

Robin Tramble interviewed me on 7/14/09 on the subject "Why Forgiveness Tests Our Faith", during her awesome Dynamic Women of Faith Telesummit. (Recording issues required that the interview be split into two parts - Part II is here.)

My transformation from atheist to born-again Christian minister was fodder for a second 60-minute interview with Evangelist Maureen Chen and co-host Juergen Mair on Kingdom via the BlogTalkRadio network on Saturday, 7/25/09.

About My Book

Stepping into the Light: You’re a Christian, what now? is a great primer for the new adult Christian, as well as a devotional and inspiring Christian living guidebook.

Written by Diane L. Harris, the daughter of a South Bronx born Jew and a Jamaican-American ex-Episcopalian Jewish convert, Stepping into the Light is the fearless testimony of a former atheist who admits that while Christian salvation erases the threat of eternal damnation, becoming a Christian is not a magical pill for the ills of life on earth.

Combining curiosity, transparency, a gift for simplifying erudition and a palpable joy, Minister Diane explores the questions for God that inundated her as a “baby believer.”

With clarity and wielding a humble sense of humor, this woman of God leads the way to a down-to-earth relationship with a loving Messiah by answering such important questions as: What’s the meaning of salvation? Who do I become when I’m born again? Do I need to know about spiritual warfare? How is the Old Testament relevant to me as a Christian? What does the New Testament teach? What promises does God have for me? Can I contribute to the kingdom of God?

If you are a Christian, “baby believer” or not, who is asking yourself, “what now?” this book is written for you.

7 Juicy Tidbits

My new Twitter buddy, Ms. Charlie Fern, wrote a meme post, or posted a meme piece, or whatever you call it typed up something called "Lucky 7, Lucky You: My Random Thoughts" in which she told 7 luscious tidbits about herself because her tagger, Ms. Stacy Lukas, told her to.

That's the way memes work: a blogger picks a number, writes that number of tidbits related to a particular theme and then tells a similar number of fellow bloggers to do the same thing and to give the person who tagged them credit for the idea.

Fair enough. It's a good way to learn some juicy tidbits about my co-denizens of the blog world and to use words like "tidbit"--for the use of which I'd ordinarily give someone else the stinkeye. Just kidding, I wouldn't give you the stinkeye for saying "tidbit". Let everybody have a little tidbit of fun.

So, thank you, Charlie Fern, and here are my seven tidbits:

  1. The first thing that popped into my mind was The Robe, by Lloyd C. Douglas. I borrowed a copy of this book from my church library when I was maybe eleven years old. For some reason, I kept it longer than I was supposed to and was so embarrassed at the idea of returning a book late, that I buried it in my backyard. Don't ask. I could not explain that thought process now if my life depended on it, and hadn't thought about this act in God knows how many years. Guess I owe a copy of The Robe, and an apology, to Christ Episcopal Church in Schenectady, NY.
  2. I was the only kid at Central Park Junior High who brought sandwiches made with matzos (matzot?) instead of bread to school during Passover, and I wasn't even Jewish. The rest of my family is Jewish, though, so no bread in the house during Passover.
  3. This past July, I celebrated 16 years as a cancer survivor. Well, I didn't actually celebrate--I don't much think about my bout with cancer. But I am currently celebrating the recent "all clear" reports received by my "facebook friend" Casey Quinlan and my sister-in-law Sandra.
  4. Moved in with my first husband three and a half months after our second date. Lasted 25 years, and the last three were the finest. Married second husband four and a half months after first husband passed away. Must have learned patience. (Benjamin and I will celebrate five years of marriage in February.)
  5. I met both Bruce Springsteen and Dan Akroyd in my own home, and didn't recognize either one, though I was a fan of both. I guess it was the incongruity of seeing them in my home with no warning that threw me off.
  6. I've met many celebrities. Dozens, at least. The only one that got me tongue-tied was the grand dame Lena Horne.
  7. As honest and (be nice now) open-mouthed as I am, I am a great secret keeper (as long as I know it's supposed to be a secret). I've kept some secrets for decades, and counting.

Now, for the next victims--I mean, here is my list of honorees with the task of repeating this ritual of self-revelation, all of whom I've met on Twitter (with links to their websites and Twitter pages):

Sheila Gregoire, @SheilaGregoire

Bev Davis, @sundaycosmetics

Father Wade Fahnestock, @FriarWade

Delores Williams, @delwilliams

Cindy Grace, @fuzzyredrobe

Julie Arduini, @surrenderedscri

Carla Y. Nix, @CarlaNix

Have fun, ya'll.

Hmmm, how can I top Dan Akroyd and the Boss being in your home, and meeting Lena Horne? I'm not sure I can, but I'm excited to be tagged. I'll most likely post my 7 next week. Great post!

I served Tom Selleck and Ted Danson drinks at a hockey game. Does that count?

I've got a bunch more tidbits, including how I made stewardesses give me cookies, over at my 7 Tidbits response!>

By the way, I LOVE the story about burying the book. That sounds like something I would do!

BRAVO! *virtual standing ovation* That was wonderful! You're a terrific writer - great visuals, great humor, I want to run out and buy your book right now! I might buy 2 so I can bury one in my back yard in your honor.
