The Lyrics to "Children, Go Where I Send Thee"
Saturday, March 28, 2009 at 07:00AM It occurs to me that there may be a handful of folk who are not familiar with the old Negro spiritual, "Children, Go Where I Send Thee" so I'm posting the lyrics as I know them. Actually, I'm stalling while I await inspiration for this series.
There are many variations on the lyrics to this old and unattributed song, but the set below is what I recall learning at Beaver Cross Summer Camp back in the day ("back in the day" being slang for "it's longer ago than I care to talk about at the moment").
Children, go where I send thee
How shall I send thee?
I'm gonna send thee one by one
One for the little bitty baby
Wrapped in swaddling clothing
He was born, born, born in Bethlehem
Children, go where I send thee
How shall I send thee?
I'm gonna send thee two by two
Two for Paul and Silas
One for the little bitty baby
He was born, born, born in Bethlehem
Children, go where I send thee
How shall I send thee?
I'm gonna send thee three by three
Three for the Hebrew children
Two for Paul and Silas
One for the little bitty baby
etc.
Four for the four who stood at the door
Five for the gospel preachers
Six for the six who couldn't get fixed
Seven for the seven who couldn't go to heaven
Eight for the eight who stood at the gate
Nine for the nine who stood in the line
Ten for the ten commandments
Eleven for the eleven who made it into heaven
Twelve for the twelve apostles
I'll be back
